The Mike Douglas Show 1980"PHOBIA" Release![]() Mike Douglas: He played the streetwise quick-witted undercover cop Dave Starsky in the hit series Starsky and Hutch, and is presently starring in a new movie Phobia. Please welcome Paul Michael PAUL:. PAUL: Well, thank you. Douglas : Were have you been hiding Paul? You have kept to say the least a low profile. PAUL: I guess I have. Douglas : What did you do, just run when that thing ended? and just hide somewhere. PAUL: Well, being a streetwise quick witted cop, you know how many times I've heard that? gee I wish I had a nickel for each time. Douglas : Are you a street person? originally where you a street kid? PAUL: No, not really, I'm from Boston (applause) hey! hello Boston , and I came from a family, my fathers an architect so we were kinda a middle class family. Douglas : You have been described as being a lot of things, charming. PAUL: Boy! I know, charming. Douglas : Humourless, angry, I'm told you have a pretty good temper Paul. PAUL: Yeah, I've had my times. Douglas : By the way, how are you affected when you pick up the tabloids? you must see the tabloids, and a guy like you who keeps a low profile, they tend to really hone-in on people like you. PAUL: Yeah, I tell ya when I finished doing the series I wanted very badly to try to make the jump to features, and I thought to myself one possible way is to maintain a low profile and be real patient and wait it out. And you see a lot of people working and you see a lot of things happening, and I guess we all like to point fingers, you do whats best for you, you do it the best way you know how, you take your best shot. Douglas : Are you in a position financially and all to sit back and pick the right thing for you? and not necessarily the thing that your going to derive the most amount of money from. PAUL: Well, as of a phone call yesterday I'm still o.k (laughs) I make em every day! Douglas : That's a wonderful position to be in, because guys tend to make wrong career moves. PAUL: Yeah, but the problem really becomes one of work breeding work and eventually no matter how secure you may be the ultimate thing is to be involved in a work process and keep going. Douglas : Are you still being paid for Starsky and Hutch? PAUL: Well, you know they got it syndicated and they got it running around the world. Douglas : But are you being paid for it? PAUL: Yeah, sometimes I'm being paid for it. (laughs) Douglas : Sometimes? they play it twice before you get paid don't they? PAUL: You know, I have never been able to understand how they do it. They send you these residual things and they say this particular show and it was run I'ts fourth time, and you call up the guild and they say well you don't get paid for the second and the fifth, and the fourth one is lower than the third one because the first one was over here on the third one, and you hang up the phone! (laughs) my doctors bill is going to be more than that. Douglas : You have a new movie called Phobia, give us a little synopsis. PAUL: Phobia is, ah..well John Huston, who directed it. Douglas : Oh my! PAUL: John described it as ten little indians, as that kind of format and basically what it's about is a psychiatrist, who I play is treating a bunch of volunteers, because the program that he's treating them with is so radical that they can't get John Q Public to do it, it has to be somebody like a prisoner. In this case they are prisoners, and he is treating them for their particular phobia's. And a phobia is any fear that is experienced by somebody to the extent that it renders them imobile. Douglas : We have a clip from the movie, do you want to set this up? PAUL: Yeah, well what happens over the course of this film is each one of these people dies according to their particular phobia, and this scene takes place after the first person has been dispatched from this earth, and that's probably the most I can tell you, It's a suspense thriller so you can't really tell too much cause that takes care of the suspense. Douglas : Sure.
