Living it Up with Ali & Jack Show"Starsky & Hutch" movie release.March 16, 2004Ali: Well, you loved them in the sexy seventies TV cop thriller series, Starsky & Hutch, well, guess what? Their back looking cooler than ever in the new Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson movie with the same name. (video clip of Starsky handing over the keys to "Starsky") Jack: Please welcome the original Starsky and Hutch, PAUL Michael Glaser and DAVID Soul! DAVID came onto the set then stopped and walked back towards the curtain when he realized PAUL wasn't with him. PAUL came out and they walked onto the set together. Ali: WOW! Jack: Well, it's so much fun to have you guys here. So much fin! DAVID: Thank you, thank you. Jack: Seventies models... PAUL: We were asked to be models! DAVID: (pointing at Jack) Keep your day job, huh! Jack: Seventies models, we had the perfect seventies models here. DAVID: (Looking at PAUL and laughing) Perfect seventies models!? Ali; You guys look the same... PAUL: You need an eye examination! Ali:..No, I don't! You guys look very similar... DAVID: Similar too...? Ali: Similar to the, to the, those guys (pointing to the picture below) you do, You haven't changed a lot. Jack: That was actually a great story in the movie of the two of you getting out of the car and coming up to... Ali: Did Ben and Own actually get you? Did they do it right? PAUL: Ben, Ben and Owen did a great job.. Ali: Yah.. DAVID: Ben got PAUL right on the money, ya. Ali: What about Owen. DAVID: Owen marches to his own drummer, I mean, he's wonderful, both of them are comedic actors ( a video clip is shown) you know, it's not really about getting PAUL to a tee, cause.. (studio feedback noise)..... Hello? Was that God speaking to us? Ali: No, we're showing a clip. PAUL: Well, who's on, them or us? Ali: Um, it's them, so we just push right through.
Ali: This was not really a reunion for you guys coming back to do the part in this movie. You guys have been friends for years right?
DAVID: ...who wants to spend more than 30 seconds with him anyway (laughter) (PAUL pretends that his feelings have been hurt and when DAVID looks over at him, PAUL softly says "It's alright")
Jack: You know, a great story, it's a great story cause you don't see an awful lot of that.. PAUL: No, you don;t. Jack: People work together, then they go off in their own orbits. PAUL: I know. Jack: But, it's nice. I remember seeing over the years that you guys stayed close. PAUL: We have, It's kinda like the tissue paper on the bottom of your heel! Jack: Part of that, part of that, I think was when you watched the show. I mean, you guys look like you were really having a good time doing the show.. DAVID: Ah, hmm Jack:..and working with each other. DAVID: That's why they call us "actors!" Ali: Well, you should have won an oscar. DAVID: No, no, we did have a good time. From the very get go, I think ah, the thing, I keep saying all the time, We're sort of chalk and cheese. we're two different... PAUL: Who's chalk? DAVID: Well, you're chalk, I'm, I'm cheese! Ali: Why do you think your show hit a nerve, because... PAUL: (grabs his inner cheek and drags his head to the side) Oh, geesh, a nerve..ahhhhh! Ali... I don't mean like root canal nerve, I mean... Jack: It was very popular. Ali: It was. PAUL: It was very popular, you know, I think there's ah, there's all kinds of things you can say, you can talk about the chemistry, the friendship. It was about the friendship. Talk about the seventies, we've just come out of the,ah, ah, Vietnam war. People were feeling pretty disillusioned, and pretty... Ali: We wanted good guys. PAUL:... we wanted good guys. we wanted to believe in something and you know, there also hadn't been the ah, buddy cop show. A more human look at cops, you know, up to that point you had ah, Jack Webb... DAVID: Thank you mame. Just the facts mame. PAUL: Right. Ali: We were looking for a little more chalk and cheese at this point! DAVID: True. Ali: Now, speaking of the show (she reaches for stuff on her table)... PAUL: Oh my God! Ali:.. let's talk about your red tomato car, (she picks up a model Torino) can we for a second? You guys, you tried to be... remember this? You guys were supposedly, these very discreet cops and yet always in the most stand out car one could possibly drive! DAVID: Well, that was my point entirely. Jack: That's the one... DAVID: That's why I called it the red tomata! I never liked that car. Jack: Let's go undercover and be as obvious as we possibly can! PAUL: That's right, that's right! It was so obvious, no one would believe it! Jack: You guys, there was a lot of physical stuff going on. Did you guys do a lot of your own, a lot of your, your own stunts, the physical stuff? DAVID: Ya, ya but we.. PAUL: Ya,ya DAVID: ..ya, but we had a lot of teachers, the best in the business, didn't we? PAUL: Yah. (clip of Death Ride in the hospital hallway) DAVID: What scene are we watching? PAUL: That's our stunt double Ali: DAVID, you saved the girl! DAVID: Well, I pulled her down on top of me, which... Jack: Got a date! DAVID: Exactly! Jack: Got her phone number and your all set! Ali: Wait, I gotta finish here (she picks up Starsky and Hutch dolls), Look at this! now, I love what the dolls are wearing. Did you actually fight over clothes? DAVID: ah, no! PAUL: No! DAVID: We wore them, well we, well, he's got one of those, I want one of those! Ali: Come on! PAUL: Well, actually for me, I just said give me something I can wear 18 hours a day because I don;t wanna be anything but comfortable! (laughter all around!) (video clip of "Discomania" ) Jack: but you know, you guys did because fashion icons. I remember I was telling this story before in '75.. Ali: They're laughing at your dancing, DAVID! (audience cheering and laughing at disco scene with "Starsky" dancing with the girl in the red hot pants!) ALI: Oh no! Oh NO! (laughter all around) Ali: I don;t see any suspenders on this doll! Jack: I remember guys in 1975, would dress like you guys. It was either the Starsky look with the jeans and the bomber jacket or the Hutch look with the turtleneck and the leather sport jacket. I got pictures of me in those. PAUL: Where do you have these pictures, Jack? Jack: Away from my children, Paul. I make sure they never see any of these things at all! Ali: Well, thank you, guys. DAVID: We were so unconscious about, ah, our wardrobe, I mean, we didn't choose our wardrobe, we just choose things we liked and it became iconic, but it wasn't something that we said "oh, let's wear these fashions of the seventies. Jack: Do you ever look back on it now, because it really was iconic and an iconic show. Do you ever look back and say to yourself "Who would've ever thought that it would be such a big deal then and remain such a big deal now? PAUL: It was a surprise, it's a surprise. DAVID: Well the film is such a big testimony to it. Ali: And that's why we're glad it's back and you guys, thank you so much for being here. we're still fans. (shaking hands) PAUL: Thank you. DAVID: Thank you. Ali: Here, for you (hands DAVID the 'Starsky" doll and tries to give PAUL the "Hutch" doll) PAUL: No, I don;'t want it! Ali: You gotta take your DAVID doll! PAUL grabs the doll and starts poking hard at it!
Ali: "Starsky and Hutch" is in theaters now and the complete first season of the TV series is on DVD!
